The Origins of Poi

The Origins of Poi

Poi is a traditional form of performance art from Maori culture, originating from the indigenous people, of New Zealand. Historically it was used to enhance coordination and strength, often performed by women while singing or telling stories.

To properly respect Poi it is important to acknowledge its cultural significance, understanding that it is more than just a dance; it is a representation of Maori heritage and identity.

While it is universally understood that the Poi of circus and flow arts are not the same as Maori Poi, yet carry the same name as a mark of respect for their origins, it is important that flow artists understand the significance of what we do.

Traditionally Poi are respected by agreeing to never hit one another with Poi. NEVER leave poi lying on the ground as that is disrespectful. Always place your poi away with respect and dignity.
